Indeed, Mark Spitz has an Olympic medal and is known for his large mustache. He trained with it at a time when athletes often depilated their body hair for a better swimming performance. He even comically stated his mustache allowed him to swim quicker since the feature deflected surrounding water away from his mouth structure making him more hydrodynamic. The next year the entire male Russian team had a mustache as well.
