In the year 1887, the mayoral list of candidates of Argonia, Kansas, included Susanna Madora Salter, an official of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It was S Salter, only then she was a candidate in name as out of sheer embarrassment her registration was just meant to ridicule her with her being a member of a women’s movement which was trying to defy any defiance. This did not happen, and now she is known as the first female mayor in America having secured over 60% of the votes cast.
