The practice of British Soldiers growing beards can be traced back during the Crimean War where the soldiers were faced with cold harsh weather that made it imperative to grow a layer of facial hair. The shaving wouldn’t be an option for the soldiers in the field either since time or resources were in short supply anyways, so beards turned out to be a global soldier frame’s fashion and became the emblem of their status in Victorian society.
