Nelson Mandela was born into the Thembu royal house, his father being a local chief and his great-grandfather having been the head of that whole region of Eastern Cape in South Africa. Such a high profile family background by and large shaped Mandela’s views and endeavours in the resistance of apartheid, which in the end was the course that saw him imprisoned for several years only to emerge as the president of South Africa later on.
