How Did Squirrels Cause Power Outages in Montana?

Kusanagi is quick with finding news, so I am not sorry that I will reference him again. The article from 'The Washington post' explains how squirrels can trigger large power outages. Squirrels need protection from the elements, and therein lies the cause. To find shelter, they try to squeeze into all kinds of nooks and crannies, which are often electrically conductive—all it takes is a little moisture, and boom! A circuit goes down. In a way, these creatures are ‘shorting the circuits.' I don’t want to whistle in the USSR, but what do you want? That’s just how things are.

In 2023 Montana, squirrels wreaked havoc by tampering with the power supply. They entered a substation and resulted in three major blackouts which left around 15 thousand individuals with no electricity.

Squirrels are pesky little critters! Some got into my brother's attic and screwed up his wiring. They also demolished a feeding station I had set up for some birds and ate up all of the bird food. Still, they are quite tasty, and make for a great stew or gumbo, or you can just pan fry them with a little onion, salt, and pepper, served over cooked rice. Yum!
