Why Were Umbrellas Once Considered Only for Women?

Women represented mothers and daughters who were constantly escorted or supervised. So why should women rough it out in the scorching sun?

Primitive societies placed women in the sun, perhaps because of maternal instincts. Victorian men did not feel the urge to cover the sun. However, they didn t suggest umbrellas, did they? They felt indifference towards others emotions. When I noticed an umbrella, I thought that brought Western imagery.

Women were denied the chance to bear their kids in the shade. It was thanks to their unyielding determination that they could manage society s expectations. Things improved when blue-collar workers took their positions.

I'm uncertain whether or not the majority still shares this view. But they did say that umbrellas were designed with females in mind.

Everyone was using umbrellas in the 18th century. Back then however, it was purely a woman’s accessory, and men were discouraged from carrying one. Men for example were expected to withstand the rough weather and not carry an umbrella. To be using an umbrella was to be perceived as weakness.

Many years ago women used umbrellas(parasols to keep out of the sun.  I’m 76 and I still have the same umbrella I received from my grandparents when I was 15!  I lived in Phoenix for most of my life - rarely if ever had a need for an umbrella to keep out of the rain!
