The origin of the term ‘y’all’ is thought to be derived from the contraction of ‘you all’. It has been attributed to the Texas and Southern dialects. There are historical appearances of its usage dating back to the 1890s.

The two syllable word ‘y’all’ can be traced back to 1631 and has roots in the British. The first mention of it was in the poem ‘The Fair Ethiopian’ written by the British poet William Lisle. The term made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary 200 years later.
