Similar to other devices, when an iPhone is handed over for exchanges during trade, it must still meet certain requirements, otherwise its future is bleak. So, if the iPhone is somewhat functional and operational, Apple mends it and markets it for sale in developing countries including India, Latin America and Africa, for instance. As a result, Apple is not only able to sell the device once again but it also rounds up competition in the second-hand smartphone market. In case the iPhone is too old, then it is demolished by Daisy, Apple’s disassembly robot which has a capacity to disassemble 200 iPhones in an hour and recover valuable recycled materials and is helping in waste management and assisting the cause of Apple.

and now it also serves as a way to keep working parts away from repair shops since they are making it harder and harder to acquire

I personally thought they were also "mining" materials such as gold and other to resell it (when the phones are almost destroyed or too old)

Because then it won’t be cycled in the aftermarket

Absent from the content was the idea that they don’t want to continue to support a large base of relatively obsolete software. This allows them to focus more effort on developing new software, not patching old software to try to pull off new features.

Correction here: apple doesn’t sell used iPhones here in India. They are not allowed
