I wonder how tire size affects the performance of a road bike. What goes different when riding one?

The size of the tires is also a factor that can have a great impact on the ride of a road bike. For instance, a broader tire, for example, 30mm, can be more comfortable due to dampening the bumps and vibrations on rough roads to an extent as well enhancing grip and stability. A narrower tire, for example, of the size, 25mm or 26mm may dampen the bumps and provide cushioning to a lesser extent, but these are used for aero benefits. In general, the use of wider tires will improve the cushioning provided by the bike.

Tires and wheels can significantly alter the character of a bike. I own a Canyon Aeroad equipped with DT Swiss ARC 1400 wheels (62mm deep), which are simply phenomenal for racing events—these deep aero wheels truly give you the sensation of speed. However, for daily use, I switch to Zipp 303 Firecrest wheels with 28mm tires, and I must say, the Aeroad feels like an entirely different bike. The most noticeable difference lies in the comfort, especially when riding on roads that aren’t in perfect condition. It’s comparable to the comfort of a gravel bike.

doesn't seem fair that you changed the stock tire sizes for the tarmac but not the aeroad, local bike shop or not.

Totally agree about 30mm tires. Swapped to tubeless 30mm this year and they are a game changer. My bike is so much more comfortable to ride now.,

I tried 30mm for one ride then changed all my bikes to 30mm ..like going from rim to disc .. I wouldn’t go back to skinny tyres ..faster, more comfortable, lower tyre pressures

I’d like to think I was ahead of the trends … been running 30’s on my Sworks Roubaix for the last three years … continental gp’s with tubes at first, but since last year tubeless with Sworks Turbo’s. Much more tunability pressure wise with wider tubeless tyres.

Great content for comparison, I’ve never had the chance to ride the SL8 or current Aeroad, they both seem like mighty beasts & you’re a lucky man to have such a predicament. 30 mm tyre definitely the way to go for comfort I’ve 30’s on my Cannondale but 28’s on both of my Pinarello’s. Keep up the good work and we all look forward to the next instalment of your progress, keep the rubber side down.
