In what manner does altitude affect the racers at the Leadville Trail 100?

The altitude of the Leadville Trail 100, from 10,000 feet to 12,400 feet, poses a great difficulty to the racers. Such heights can make them tired a lot faster and hence need to be paced properly, so that athletes do not explode during the race.

Do you adjust your power to the weather? Heat and especially humidity can be worse than altitude.
