Dark matter is a peculiar type of substance which cannot be detected by our observations as dark matter neither emits light nor absorbs it. Regardless, it is extremely significant because it makes up approximately 85 percent of the total mass in the universe. It is the dark matter's gravity which helps in defining the shape, formation and structure of the galaxies. A clear knowledge of dark matter is necessary to have an accurate description of the structure of the universe and its dynamics.

If we peer out into the universe and look for and travel through it and find no other living being or thing, and we have been doing this for hundreds of years then to me it was just  through shear luck that earth was created and if  that's the case, then to my way of thinking, there must be another plant out there with life, not as we know it but some other form of  species or thing that has some form of intelligence.
