Because of its position close to the Sun and the lack of an extensive atmosphere to moderate the temperature, overnight temperature fluctuations of 800°F (427°C) to -290°F (-179°C) are observed on Mercury.

I always think of the "chaotic" period of our solar system as an ongoing super massive bunch of collisions, like a break on an enormous planetary pool table. Ice on Mercury is the most surprising thing.
