Why Does Sunlight Affect Skin and Hair Color Differently?

It is so because melanin gives a pigment to the skin, whereas carotene gives a pigment to hair. When we are exposed to sunlight, our skin produces more of this pigment to protect itself. As a result, the skin darkens. Hair, however, contains some of its natural pigments but remains relatively blonde in contrast to tanned skin. Therefore, in the sun, the skin turns darker, but the hue of the hair remains the same density.

The sunshine acts to decompose melanin that is the coloring of the hair and skin. But if your hair's melanin gets deteriorated due to sun exposure, then that hair will turn lighter unlike new hairs that are under the skin. On the other hand, in reaction to the sun damages, your skin increases the production of melanin containing cells which functions against ultraviolet rays that cause your skin to become darker.
