Blood samples are most often taken from the ring finger due to use as the least active finger which has thin skin for quick and low pain pricking. As well, it does not have tendons that lead into the whole dominant hand, and hence, there is less likelihood of the infective process spreading to that of a hand. Healing is more rapid even when the wound is on the ring finger.

Lastly, as a nurse, I can tell you we usually use the index finger for blood because the person can hold it out by itself. I have heard, nor was a taught to use the ring finger because of infection prevention. And for diabetics who we are testing finger samples from routinely we rotate finger to let them heal a bit between sticks. So that fact is just not true.

I beg your pardon, I have never had my blood drawn for testing out of my ring finger. Always out of the inside of my elbow, and also once out of my scalp. I was a baby when that happened.
