Why is it that being rejected can evoke a sensation that is akin to ‘hurt feeling’ which is associated with physical torment?

Social exclusion triggers the very same areas of the brain that are active during the sensation of pain. It is for this reason that we feel more hurt than we ought to after being rejected for the first time in our lives.
