Some benefits of fiat currency are that when it is managed by an efficient government, there can be some level of assurance in its stability, there is centralized authority which allows decisions to be made quickly, the presence of insurance policies such FDIC or SIPC, and the fact that there are both digital and physical forms of it which are easy to operate. Some demerits include having to surrender to the bank some degree of financial autonomy and privacy, implications such as transaction costs and account maintenance costs, the risk of inflation and buying power erosion, and risks relating to cash such as theft, damage, and loss. Additionally, as a result of its anonymous nature, some have begun to use fiat currency for unscrupulous practices.
