In certain straightforward situations such as a technical problem, or a passenger requiring medical attention, the commander of the flight may decide to land in a shorter time than originally planned and thus fuel might have to be dumped. Since all aircraft are always in the situation of being the heaviest during the take-off when fuel continental tanks are full, it is necessary to dump fuel in order to reduce the weight at the time of landing for the safety of the aircraft and the passengers.
