The positive feeling of ‘grounding’ while in the air is referred to as the ground effect. When the aircraft is in its final approach, the air located in the void area between the aircraft’s wings and the ground gets squashed and acts as a buffer. This is common knowledge among pilots, while those who sit in the adjoining space, inter alia window seats, may sense being on a soft air cushion for the final stages of the approach.

Ground effect more technically is the extra lift provided by the small distance from wing to ground.
