Can someone explain why it's necessary to stow your tray table during takeoff and landing?

You need to stow your tray table and have your seat in the upright position during takeoff and landing for safety reasons. In case of a hard impact, an open tray table can injure you, and if your seat is reclined, it increases the risk of head trauma.

That’s not the reason that seat backs need to be all the way forwards, it’s so that people can clear the aisle easier, in an emergency.
