Should Beginners Use a Guitar Pick for Strumming?

During the earlier stages for a beginner guitar player, would using a pick for strumming be advisable? or could one go without a pick and still be effective at strumming?

For starters, it is probably advisable to abandon the use of a pick since this will most likely just accentuate the errors that the learner has. Instead, you can strum instruments with the soft part of your thumb or use the nails on your other fingers as you get familiar with the instrument and are thus more likely to make mistakes.
