Using a common bicycle with a large chainring can technically be done but is complex. There may be some issues with the chainstay clearance for example, and the existing chainset might have to be replaced due to its bolt pattern. A misunderstanding might also arise regarding the limitation of a front derailleur to limit the diameter of a chainring, and the use of a single or double chain will probably be needed to connect larger chains around centers of greater dimensions.

I'm turning my gravel bike into a more-of a road bike. I still really enjoy the 1x system, and there are no hills THAT crazy in my city. I'm going from a 40t chainring / 11-42t cassette to a 44t chainring / 11-36t cassette. If ever I come to an ascent I can't manage - I'm 110% certain this content will pop-up in my head.

I have the 69T version of that chainring.  I cut shift ramps and added shift pins to it and made a 52-58-69 triple.  Moved the FD up and trimmed the cage to shape.  Rear is 7 speed 14-28.  8 speed chain.  Big ring shifts perfectly.

This would be great on an e-bike with high torque motor. You could set it at one gear and use the motor assist levels as your “gears”! Uphill and down on the one gear! Superb!!!

Chainring and sprocket size don't really affect cross-chaining severity since only half the teeth on either are engaged (in line with the BB spindle and rear axle.)

PLEASE don't put spacers on Hollowtech 2 axles. Really bad advice. It'll reduce the interface on the non drive crank. Also the preload bolt won't go in far enough and could fail. You're more likely to overload the BB bearings. So many reasons why Alex should have waited for the chainring bolt spacers...
