Another difference between gravel bikes and road bikes is tire clearance which can be described as the distance between the surface of your tire and the frame of your bike, most, if not all gravel bikes have more clearance for wider tires, and are built to withstand abuse in tough conditions. If the frame has adequate clearance, tires that are wider or fatter can also be installed without any problems. On the contrary, if a wider frame is used with wider tires, it may cause tire rub against the frame which may cause damage. Road tires should thus be chosen such that they do not exceed that clearance of a gravel bike's frame.
