As per some surveys, the average espresso dose size has progressively shrunk since 2015. In those days, the average size was a little less than 18.7 grams with 21 – 22 gram doses being more preferred. At the moment, 18 grams is the most widely used various doses size which is therefore the clear winner.

On Reddit you can see the number focused recipe trend. People celebrating hitting the 18/36 in 30 sec “perfect shot” it is quite understandable as baking recipes are about the numbers.

My extraction has gone up over time purely by preference. I prefer the ritual of sitting and sipping my coffee to last a bit longer, but doing two cups is unreasonable because of price and probably health?
I used to follow the standard recipes and I see myself in the data, but I do make some very long espressos more and more regularly. Sometimes 18 in 80 out. It's a different experience to the shorter 18/40, which is more taste oriented. The 18/80 is more of a moment, rather than a beverage. And honestly, it still tastes really good.
