Apple has used the same camera modules for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. The ultra-wide camera offers a considerable leap to a 48 MP quad Bayer sensor and the 5x telephoto camera module is consistent with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The main camera also gets better with 48MP and doubled readout speed which may improve video and photo capabilities. The selfie camera is still a fixed 12MP sensor.

Since there's already 392 comments, I hope mine doesn't get lost... did you guys test the 16 Pro's 3x against the 16 Pro Max's 5x for photography uses?  I know Jordan prefers the 3x for purposes, but did you guys get files of these two shooting the same still life subjects in RAW?  An IQ comparison between the two of them would be really cool to see.

Great review.  It seems like the biggest benefits are the 48 megapixel 0.5x sensor and the faster readout.  These are hardware related.  but…. I’m wondering how many of the changes are software related and will also show up on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18.  Better hair refinement, for instance.

There should be a section in the review where you use Halides new process zero mode because there's way too much processing happening with the iPhone photos. This review is basically reviewing the software of the camera, whereas if you used Halides process zero, you'd be reviewing the actual camera hardware

Any comment on Toni Northrup's analysis that the 48Mpixel is bogus?

no optical magnification between 1x and 5x is insane.

I have the 14PM, and was hoping to see some improvements for flares and ghostings. I took a night photo of the Big Ben last year, where the green arrows from the signs on the crosswalk, floats mid-air. Maybe something you cant get away with on smartphone cameras, but was def. disappointing.

Tony Northrop claimed 48 MP was fraud, but you guys are showing better results for macros. I think you have the better case.

If my math and assumptions are correct, I could shoot 48mpix raw with the main camera at 2x optical, then crop in to 5x and get a 19mpix resultant image. That would give me more resolution that 5x optical zoom using the 12mpix periscope telephoto. Possibly the image from the main camera would also have improved colour and other qualities. Am I missing something here?
