I've heard there is a new camera control on the iPhone 16. What is it for?

There are many capabilities related to the new camera control on iPhone 16, heavy press is used to take a photo, light press is to engage with zoom slider for zoom out or in, while double light press gets the user access to the options which can be also controlled by the swipe gesture. However, it might get a bit uncomfortable for some users, as it can lead to hand stresses.

I think the thing about camera control is that it’s not a feature aimed at the general average user. It’s a feature aimed squarely at photo/video/film professionals or enthusiasts, so in that regard most users would find it dumb, but it’s anything but for the intended demographic.
