What Are the Risks of Using a 12-Speed Chain on an 11-Speed Cassette?

Is it a good idea to pair an 12-speed chain with an 11-speed cassette? What’s the worst that could happen? On the bright side, your bike may work fine and no damage may be caused, but to be on the safe side, avoid mixing components as different speeds have different designs, making them difficult to work with. This will most likely result in unnecessary stress and exertion. An 11-speed cassette is not designed for a 12-speed chain, leading to substandard performance and eventual breakdown. Using an 12-speed chain on an 11-speed cassette has possible bad results which persist endlessly.

An 11-speed cassette can suit an 11-speed cassette if the risks inherent are acknowledged. The issue arises from the one-way compatibility of these components since an eleven drivetrain is designed for wider spacing that the twelve speed can cause wear to both the cassettes and chains more quickly when paired together.

Do you think you would see increased wear if you never had to shift (ie: if I kept my gravel bike on the trainer, and the trainer in erg mode, solely for intervals)?

Any long term results? Im interested in using the axs deraileur with my current 11sp cassette and sram 11sp chain for my mountain bike.

Could you use a AXS rd with an 11spd chain/cassette? As 11speed etap rd are expensive new??

Just curious how if we use 11s chain?
