Although one study noted a slight improvement when periodic HIT was used compared to still using it, the differences were not from any significance that would give any finality towards periodized HIIT training as being superior compared to non-periodized forms. A majority of elite athletes and their respective coaches though tend to follow a periodized form and push the athlete closer to raceday. Such findings may be explainable by the fact that only few sessions of HIT are enough to achieve performance benefits, thus leading to overuse of HIT throughout the seasons. Common sense dictates that HIT training should be done off-season ahead of any racing for best performance.
