Ultra wide sensor is not larger, they basically just sub divided each pixel into 4, meaning when you pixel bin you get back the same 12mp. Previous generation had pixel sizes of 1.4um and now it's 0.7um

The iPhone camera is still only 12MP regarding its hardware.  Apple uses special software to enhance 12MP to 48MP, so it's effectively a beefed-up 12MP.  An actual 48MP digital camera will produce a much better image.
