I've heard it said that actively engaging your glutes is important when cycling. Why is that the case?

The glutes , being the second biggest muscle group, should be of particular interest during cycling as they are responsible for pelvic stabilization and hip extension. Even though the glute muscles do not actually produce most of the power which is required to turnover the pedals, it is important to have active glutes so they can stabilize the pelvis to the legs in terms of alignment which translates to efficiency when cycling.
