The newest M4 iPad Pro is out for purchase- should you get one, or is there no need for it, since an older version would work fine?

Although an earlier model such as the M1 iPad Air or even an older iPad Pro can still suffice for many users and may be more cost-effective, those who love technology and are engaged in content creation may choose to procure the M4 iPad Pro simply for its new features like the Apple Pencil Pro. There is also a possibility that M4 iPad Pro can transform into a fully functional desktop type computer as well. But it is advisable, as a general rule, to purchase a product based on what it is at the moment and not on what it is expected to become.

My 2021 11” M1 will do  all I want for years and years.

The M4 is better because of the insane brightness and quality display. Functionally my M1 iPad Pro is effectively the same as the M4, and I don’t really notice the faster chip or weight saving, but that display! You can use it in direct sunlight with sunglasses on. And the pinch gesture on the pencil. And the camera being in the right place. It’s too expensive for sure, but it is just a lovely bit of kit. iPadOS hobbles it artificially, so it is limited to companion device status, but it is just lovely to use. This plus 16gb M3 Air is just an awesome combo!

Nice content, might consider this when I upgrade from my M1 13”

I'm still confused at why any iPad needs this much power. To your point, why not use a macbook? What's the most processor intensive thing you do on the ipad?

I still haven't found a reason why anyone would need more than an 11 or 13" M1 iPad Pro. Even if you make the purchase in replacement of a MBA or MBP, haven't seen the software really utilize all the extra power from the M2/M4 chips. Unless you really really want that screen, save your money and get a nice refurbished M1. These M4's with the keyboard and pencil are just way too expensive to justify vs getting a MBP.
