I’m interested in the optimal setup for a bike for the Unbound Gravel Race. What attributes are required?

The pilot stage opposing Unebounded Gravel Racing has suggested the need of riding a specially designed bike where speed is optimized on rough terrains involving loose gravels. Such setup takes in mountain bicycle tires surrounded by road wheels that are relatively deep, a gearing system for road target, a suspension fork made of carbon, a stem of considerable length, and relatively narrow handle bars. The physics of moving the bike across a rough decentralized land surface usually involves these types of components making it an active or passive activity that needs development, sometimes even supported by a computer model of a frame in a wind tunnel.

Dylan, another great content. Thanks for stopping by and checking in with the "Shiftless" podcast crew. Great interview. But I have to say I love your crank/chainring/PM setup. Seems like an awesome "hack", and I'm just glad to see other options than a 1x40T ring in the front. Keep up the great work and good luck out there at Unbound! Hope you and Backwards Hat Dylan smash it!

I was going to mention the tire clearance in the peanut butter mud but you had that covered.

Another great content, Dylan. Unusual gear choices for marginal gains, backed up with wind tunnel receipts, is the content I'm here for. Good luck at Unbound!

Dylan, congrats again to your Unbound 2024 results! Top 10 in this field and just 5min behind the winner is an incredible achievement. It would be great if you could do a follow-up to this content or say a few words in your next bike set-up content on what worked well and what did not with this specific bike set-up (eg how was the Lauf fork on the chunkier gravel sections, did you have enough control with the narrow bars, were you comfortable enough with the long stem and negative rise, was the minimal tire clearance an issue at all, were you happy with your wide tire choice, etc.?). Thanks again for your great contents and the inspiration you bring to so many fellow tryhards

AND AND, presumably, those conti's are seating and sealing on those rims! Pardon my focused obsession on tires. And wheels. And bike reconstruction post air-travel.  You've also sold some of Josh's sealant. Running tubeless, of course. Much appreciation to you and Josh for the analysis. Noting you're running road pedals...as a preference. Interesting...far more so than cables.
And white shoes.
