The most conspicuous difference between pyramid schemes and legally accepted multi-level marketing (MLM) companies is that the MLM members earn’ the bulk of their rewards by selling a product or a service to end users or retail customers, whereas in pyramid schemes, new sellers are obtained through the compensation of already registered members to sign up new recruits’. This however is not always the case since in practice this distinction can be blurred as a few of the MLM companies do allow their members to earn profits from the sale of the goods only.
