GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter located in the brain having an inhibitory action and also has a calming effect by lowering excitability of neurons. Its contribution to overall neurotransmission is significant as GABA is present in about 20% of the brain's neurotransmission. In the central nervous system, GABA is also referred to as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and, in correlation with its excitatory counterpart, glutamate, ensures that proper levels of excitation and relaxation are maintained. For the normal functioning of the human brain, adequate concentration of GABA is a prerequisite, and its shortage leads to such characteristics as irritability, increased levels of agitation and anxiety, and depression together with sleep difficulties.

This is great, thanks. I used to use GABA a lot but it has become very difficult to get in the UK - no laws or anything, no discussion but they're restricting all kinds of substances that are really useful to us. For a few years now have been using powdered l-theanine under the tongue and it is just magic. A small amount enables me to concentrate on work for longer, a larger dose helps me to calm down and sleep better at night. Highly recommend it.
Edit: I wonder whether GABA taken directly DOES help not just if you have a leaky gut but because, perhaps, the gut has GABA receptors just as it has serotonin receptors?

Thats why people like to drink as it interacts with Gaba giving you that relaxed feeling but its a double edged sword as you could get addicted to it and end up becoming an alcoholic if you are predisposed to the condition ,

I work in Addiction Recovery and so many of my clients are prescribed Gabapentin which is a GABBA agonist and it makes so much sense now.

GABA DOES cross the BBB, several studies have shown this (Frey and Löscher, 1980; Löscher, 1981; Löscher and Frey, 1982; Al-Sarraf, 2002; Shyamaladevi et al., 2002). Additionally, studies have shown the ingestion of GABA (800 mg) enhanced the ability of prioritized planned actions and inhibitory control Verbruggen and Logan, 2008; Steenbergen et al., 2015a).

I thought they realized Gaba is made in the gut? "
People also ask
Is GABA produced in the gut or brain?
It should be noted that GABA is mainly produced by Bacteroides in the gut and that Bacteroides is the largest group of GABA producers in the gut (Pokusaeva et al., 2017)."
