I am frequently tense during freestyle swimming. How do I accomplish relaxation and control my breathing?

It’s necessary to make sure when doing freestyle strokes, that a relaxed and natural diaphragmatic breath is taken first, with the first breath being relaxed and not hyperventilating or drawn from the upper chest. Instead, focus on taking a deep breath for three to five seconds and exhaling for the same time, using the diaphragm. The diaphragm can effectively aid in reducing heart rate and hyperventilation in general. It could take some time and several sessions for users with water phobia to become confident with this breathing method.

Tension!!!  The first lap or two in the pool I always have greater tension.  It affects my technique and where air goes (not deep enough).  When I feel like the oxygen is lacking in my body I also tense up.  It’s a nightmarish cycle of dread.  I am conscious of the signs and am learning to manage dread and tension.  I try not to focus on the worry, loosen up my neck and shoulders, and pretend to not needing air.
