Effective stroke timing in a freestyle swimming technique remains a ‘front quadrant’ technique, wherein throughout the stroke there’s always hand or forearm reach ahead of the head. In achieving this, it is necessary to practise in ‘slow to fast’ mode where there is no rush to reach forward then accelerate in going through the second phase of the stroke evenly. Such techniques help retain balance and control and prevent the sensation of rushing and sinking.
